The theme guiding the establishment of this consulting creation is based on the experiences of the creator of this business. She came to the US freshly out of high (secondary) school from her country of origin Nigeria many years ago. Nigeria’s educational system was for the most part very similar to that of the British system. Coupled with the fact that English is my second language, there was a huge gap in the learning system for me. I struggled with certain learning difficulties such as effective note-taking, time management, multiple-choice examinations, etc. Many of my academic struggles were more evident as a nursing student in the nursing program I attended. When the opportunity to investigate why I struggled so much came as a doctoral student, I jumped on it. My doctoral research was to examine student and faculty views regarding factors that contribute to the academic success and retention of English as a Second language students and suggested administrators should make cultural awareness competency compulsory. I created a program to address some of these struggles and was executed in 2017 as part of Student Success initiatives. The name of the program: The Proactive Approach to Student Success (PASS) Program. The program’s approach to success focuses on orientation. The Holy Cross Foundation awarded a grant to find the PASS Program about three semesters before the money ran out. PASS did not just benefit the ESL students, all the students who participated benefited from this program.
